DOWNTOWN. A.P. Stump's Chophouse is a favorite destination for couples in the downtown area who are looking for a classy night on the town. The staff is courteous and knowledgeable, and the club-like setting is intimate without being overly reserved. The menu features such entrees as lamb, ribeye and Maine lobster. The bar area is a popular place to hang out before or after dinner, and the restaurant also has a large patio area. Live jazz can be heard Tuesday through Saturday.

WILLOW GLEN. Located in the quiet Willow Glen area, away from the bustle of downtown San Jose, but still close enough to be a good lunch getaway. This fun restaurant specializes in seafood and pasta, but also offers such dishes as filet mignon, roast chicken served with garlic potatoes, and some tasty baby back ribs. The restaurant's ski-lodge atmosphere is one that the doctor would order: a fireplace, pool tables, and a cozy bar area that seems to welcome you to stay for hours.

This popular chain has a location across from the Valley Fair Mall. Inside, you'll find an open dining area that is decorated in pastels, yet dimly lit and somewhat romantic. The menu is as eclectic as the décor, with options that include crab cakes, a calamari and artichoke dish, and chocolate whiskey cake. President Bill Clinton once dined at the California Cafe's Los Gatos location. A superb Sunday brunch is available.

DOWNTOWN. Eulipia Restaurant and Bar is a trendy little restaurant located within easy walking distance of San Jose's top attractions and shops. The upstairs bar area has been a hub for local artists and poets since the restaurant's opening in 1977, and the romantic downstairs dining area is noteworthy for its linen tablecloths, artwork, candles and red brick walls. The cuisine is Californian and New American with entrees such as Atlantic Salmon roasted with cashew nuts and red wine braised shortribs. Try their famous Macaroni and White Cheddar Cheese as the perfect side dish. The restaurant's "come as you are" policy makes it popular with patrons of all ages. Reservations are required.

DOWNTOWN. This rather clubby restaurant, located at the Fairmont Hotel, is well known for its hand-stirred martinis and excellent grilled dishes that include seafood, prime rib, and filet mignon. With private dining rooms and an intimate main dining area that boasts hardwood floors and leather booths, the restaurant keeps with the Fairmont's well-earned reputation for elegance.
